On a crisp October afternoon, Newport, South Wales, was filled with the vibrant energy of community leaders and committed members gathered for the 21st Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Sanyang UK Association (SUKA). This AGM, held on October 5th, 2024, marked not just another meeting but a celebration of SUKA’s decade-long journey of service, unity, and impact. The setting of Newport, nestled between its rolling hills and historic docks, resonated with SUKA’s mission: preserving cultural heritage while building inclusive pathways of support.

A Gathering of Shared Vision
The AGM was held in accordance with Charity Commission guidelines for England and Wales, making it not only a procedural gathering but also a powerful reminder of shared purpose. The event opened with both Muslim and Christian prayers, a tribute to the rich diversity of SUKA’s membership. Attendees from various backgrounds renewed their commitment to fostering unity between the UK and The Gambia, promoting social inclusion, and strengthening community cohesion.

Celebrating Ten Years of Milestones
The AGM honoured SUKA’s progress over the past decade, showcasing achievements that have made a tangible difference both locally and abroad. Chair Sarjo Fofana and Secretary General Saikou Camara highlighted significant accomplishments, including providing computers to over 500 schoolchildren in The Gambia and delivering medical equipment to healthcare facilities in Sanyang. These are not mere acts of charity but represent lasting investments in communities in need. Additionally, SUKA has plans to expand IT literacy programs in schools across the Kombo South District to continue fostering education and opportunity.
Partnerships with UK charities, including Cancer Research UK, demonstrate SUKA’s dedication to addressing global issues beyond Gambian communities, rooted in values of unity and shared responsibility.
Financial Stability: A Foundation for Growth
The Association’s financial health was another AGM highlight, demonstrating resilience amid economic uncertainties. With a bank balance of £13,674.99, annual expenditures surpassing £3,232.81, and reserves of over £10,000, Treasurer Abdoulie Jabang reported SUKA’s robust financial position, reflecting careful stewardship and a commitment to transparency. This financial strength ensures SUKA can continue to expand its programs and meet the growing needs of vulnerable groups.

Leadership and Governance in Action
In a testament to SUKA’s democratic principles, all trustees were re-elected, reaffirming their dedication to SUKA’s mission. The appointment of new auditors, Ousman Bah and Bintou Michelle Sambou, marked another step toward ensuring accountability. Notable resolutions included providing enhanced access to the Association’s bank accounts for three trustees, streamlining operational efficiency while upholding governance standards. A discussion on gender balance, led by Ousman Bah, was met with strong support, with a focus on increasing female representation in executive roles.
The Power of Togetherness
One of the AGM’s most memorable moments came when Kawsu Sanyang addressed attendees on “The Benefits of Togetherness.” His call for unity, forgiveness, and collaboration resonated deeply, emphasizing the Association’s commitment to collective action and community strength. In an era marked by division, this message of togetherness served as a timely reminder of SUKA’s enduring mission.
Ebrima Ceesay also delivered an impactful address on the challenges of fundraising and the importance of safeguarding policies. He underscored the need for continuous growth and certifications like the Fundraiser Regulator to enhance SUKA’s operational integrity and profile.
Honouring Volunteers: The Heart of SUKA
The AGM concluded with certificates of appreciation for members whose volunteer efforts have transformed SUKA into a powerful force for good. This heartfelt recognition of volunteers underscored the value of individuals who devote their time, effort, and passion to the Association’s cause, embodying SUKA’s spirit of service.
A Vision for the Future
As SUKA marks its 10th anniversary, the path forward holds boundless promise. With a solid foundation, committed leadership, and a clear vision, SUKA is poised to deepen its impact in both the UK and The Gambia. While the next AGM is set for March 2025, the Association’s work continues with renewed energy, driven by the inspiration drawn from this year’s meeting.
Reflecting on the 2024 AGM, SUKA stands as more than a charity; it is a community, a family, and a beacon of hope for those in need. Together, we have achieved extraordinary things, and with continued support, the future shines even brighter.
